Insel Mainau, also known as Flower Island, is a year-round Botanical Garden Island located on Lake Constance between Switzerland and Germany. We visited this gorgeous Insel in the middle of June and I found it to be an absolutely spectacular wonderland of flowers and foliage, themed gardens and even a butterfly house - all surrounding a beautiful Baroque Castle and Church This island has breathtaking views of the glistening lake and endless amounts of beauty in every direction. Easily, Insel Mainau will remain forever at the top of my list of favorite day trips.
The botanical experience started as we made our way from the bamboo lined parking area towards the main entrance through this lovely lush green pathway. The official entrance has a garden gift shop, rest area, information booth and ticket sales. (We purchased day tickets and realized later that it would have been well worth the money to purchase the annual ticket instead.) There is a short bridge to walk across to get to the Insel with wonderful views of the lake on either side.
The beautiful crystal blue water of Lake Constance.
It was a partly cloudy summer day and the Insel had many visitors, but one thing I really loved was how we could always find a quiet little place for a photo or to rest and enjoy the view.
A staircase leading down to the Rose Garden where a private wedding reception was getting started. I was enjoying the flowering topiaries, I always thought fuchsia flowers looked like dancing ballerinas.
There were so many details to discover...like this water fountain & stone inlay path off to one side of the rose garden.
The gardener's tower, with a basement that dates back to the middle ages is now a souvenir shop & historical exhibit.
The Baroque Palace Church, St. Marien, was a wonderful place for a few quiet moments of prayer.
Beautiful tall trees provide soothing comfort and shade while walking along Spring Avenue.
From this higher location on the island, we were able to see lovely views to the gardens and lake below.
A glimpse of the fairy tale Swedish Tower from the vineyard side and here I am in front of its wonderful front door.
Standing so close to this gorgeous fossil, a specimen of petrified wood from Arizona, had me missing home... I loved the rich colors and glossy, reflective surface. The Insel's Arboretum is also home to over 250 species of majestic old trees, including giant Redwoods from California, Atlas and Lebanon Cedars.
Inside the Butterfly House was a tropical paradise. Gorgeous brightly colored flowers, lush plants, large water falls, fountains and little streams... and of course butterflies! Sweet little butterflies in every color and shape fluttered around us as we wandered through the levels of this charming house. The air inside was so warm and moist, we were thinking this would be the perfect place to visit on a freezing cold grey winter day!
HP standing by the waterfall/tunnel, apparently there was a line of people waiting for me to take the photo so they could walk through... oops! / Some of his beautiful butterfly photos.
This was such a beautiful and healing experience to be on this Insel for the afternoon. I would definitely love to go back again soon. + There are so many photographs we missed... like a photo of the Castle and Church and several other themed garden areas. Insel Mainau has a wonderful website where you can see so many gorgeous photos from all seasons.
What's in the yellow WF bag? We were on the Insel for a just a few hours in the afternoon so we did not bring a lot with us... two protein bars, we love Roo'bar spirulina and cherry maca (available at Al Natura), a thermos with water + aloe (alnavit 100% aloe juice), two hand sanitizer towelettes from giovanni, (I order these from iherb.com, we have a discount code & you are welcome to use ours... PAC2820 ) these feel like a little spa hand sanitizing experience, in lavender, spearmint and grapefruit scents. Sunglasses, Avene antioxidant sunscreen in 50 spf (when in swiss, I order avene from adlershop.ch they always send really wonderful samples and sometimes discount cards and their home delivery is very fast.)
And our favorite hats: San Diego Hat Company, El Campo, Ultrabraided sun hat With my skin being so fragile and sensitive, I wear this wide brimmed hat nearly every day. This brim will give you full face 50 spf sun protection, chin and neck included, and it folds in half for packing and springs right back into shape to wear. San Diego Hat Company, El Campo, Ultrabraided sun hat in colors mixed coffee and toast.
